Yvan’s Summer

Those who know me and who have asked me how I’m doing have probably heard, at one point or another, “I’m excellent, amazing…if I was any better, I’d need a twin!” People sometimes think I’m joking when I say that. Truth is, even in my most challenging moments, I’m the luckiest person on the planet. I have the most incredible family, amazing friends, and the most loveable pup ever. I pinch myself every morning because I get to go to my dream career and work with some very talented people. I can’t believe my luck that I get to spend my days working with and helping friends (disguised as clients). And just when I thought it couldn’t get any better…well, it did. I’m married!!!

On July 25th, I had the blessing of seeing my beautiful bride walk down the aisle. It was the most extraordinary day of my life. I still feel euphoric just thinking about it. That day was more than just a celebration of our union, our family, our support system and our love. It was a celebration of life.

Just 5 weeks earlier, my fiance fell extremely ill. She’d eventually fall into a coma and have to fight for her life. After her 21 day battle, she was victorious and got to come home with two weeks to go until our wedding. By then, she had lost 15 pounds, had difficulty sitting in a chair, couldn’t stand on her own, couldn’t take a step without a walker, and had to relearn a lot of the basic fundamental activities that we all take for granted. But seeing her on that magical wedding day, you’d never know what she’d just been through.

We’ve all heard the expression, “What doesn’t kill you, makes you stronger.” A twist on this that I’ve always liked is “Why would you give up the opportunity to go through adversity, knowing it will make you stronger?” This summer, I can say we took full advantage of the opportunity before us. Not many couples get to test their vows before they say their “I do’s.” I couldn’t think of a better way for us to start our marriage!

It’s certainly been a challenging ride, but true to the theory, we’re infinitely better for it. Our union is stronger than ever.
